Leg Press Machine Dimensions: Footprint, Ceiling, and Live Area

Leg press machine dimensions run from 48 x 38 inches for a compact vertical press to as much as 96 inches long and 68 inches wide for a commercial 45-degree sled. The footprint isn’t the space you need, though. Body-Solid’s manual for its GLPH1100 combo gives a 10 x 5 ft usage space for a machine under 8 x 3 ft. Measure the floor, the ceiling, and every door on the way in. Our leg press machine guide covers types and prices.

Leg press machine dimensions by type

Home combos are long and narrow, and commercial sleds are wider. Verticals are short, but some are wide: Body-Solid’s GVLP is 53 inches long and 62 wide. Body-Solid says most leg presses “typically start at 72” inches long.

Why one machine can have three sizes

Body-Solid lists its GLPH1100B leg press/hack squat at 96 x 34 x 56 inches on the product page, 83 x 34 x 56 on the data sheet, and 92 x 35 (7 ft 8 in by 2 ft 11 in) in the 2010 owner’s manual. Plan around the largest figure and ask the maker to confirm.

Live area: the space you need in use

Footprint vs usage space

Top-down view drawn to scale. A leg press and hack squat machine measuring 7 feet 8 inches by 2 feet 11 inches sits inside a dashed usage space of 10 by 5 feet, as given in Body-Solid's GLPH1100 manual.usage space 10 x 5 ftmachine7 ft 8 in x 2 ft 11 inlisted ceiling need: 4 ft 7 in

The usage space is about 2.2 times the machine's floor area, and Body-Solid says it can be more for some users.

At rest vs in use

Top-down view drawn to scale of a selectorized leg press that is 68 inches long at rest and 100 inches long in use, 42 inches wide, with a dashed free area of 0.6 meters, or 23.6 inches, around it, from Cybex's Eagle NX manual.0.6 m (23.6 in) free areain use: 100 in longat rest 68 in+32 in42 in wide

The manual's in-use length is 47% longer than the resting length. Plan around the bigger number.

Side view: height and travel

Listed height is the frame at rest. A standing hack squat or a vertical press can need more headroom than that.

Heaviest piece to carry

Bar chart of the heaviest single box listed for four Body-Solid leg presses: 121 pounds for the GLPH1100B, 143 for the GCLP100, 286 for the SGLP500, and 357 for the LVLP. Body-Solid lists every box. Life Fitness gives the Hammer Strength machine's weight, not box sizes.

Space planning for a leg press. Original schematics: the first two panels are drawn to scale from Body-Solid and Cybex manuals, the side view is not to scale, and the box weights come from Body-Solid product pages and Life Fitness.

Three makers put numbers on the floor a machine needs in use:

  • Body-Solid gives the GLPH1100 a 5 x 10 ft usage space and says it “could be more, depending on the user.” That’s about 2.2 times the machine’s floor area.
  • Life Fitness recommends 113 x 89 inches for the Hammer Strength Linear’s 95 x 65 inch frame, about 1.6 times the floor area.
  • Cybex lists its Eagle NX at 68 inches long at rest and 100 inches in use, with a minimum free area of 23.6 inches (0.6 m) “for access to unit and emergency dismount.” Adjacent units may share it.

Getting in, loading plates, and travel

Body-Solid’s manual says to place the unit “a few feet from the walls or furniture” for easy access. On a combo, leave clear floor at the low end of the rails for hack squat mode.

US commercial gyms have one more rule. Under the 2010 ADA Standards, at least one of each type of exercise machine needs a clear floor space of at least 30 x 48 inches. Neighboring machines’ spaces may overlap.

Listed sizes include built-in storage horns but not a plate tree. Our judgment is to leave at least a shoulder-width walkway beside each loading horn. On sleds, travel usually stays inside the frame, though no maker we read says so outright. Selectorized and leverage machines can grow, as the Eagle NX does, so ask whether a single listed size is resting or in use.

Ceiling height

Listed heights for the 45-degree presses we checked run from 53 inches (Titan’s combo) to 62.25 inches (Matrix’s Magnum). Body-Solid’s manual gives a 4 ft 7 in ceiling requirement for the GLPH1100, close to the frame’s listed 56-inch height, so it can’t allow for a standing user.

In hack squat mode, your head sits above the footplate by your full height. No maker we read publishes that footplate height, so ask for it, then add your height and a few inches.

On a vertical press like Body-Solid’s 72-inch GVLP, check the space above with your legs straight.

Doors, stairs, and delivery

Home machines arrive in boxes, and Body-Solid lists every one. The GLPH1100B’s longest is 79 inches, the SGLP500’s heaviest is 286 lb, and the LVLP’s is 357 lb at 78 x 34 x 12 inches. Life Fitness doesn’t list box sizes for the Hammer Strength Linear, only its 630 lb machine weight. Measure each door fully open, stop to stop, and every turn on the route.

Floor and anchoring

Machine weights we found run from 77 lb (Body-Solid’s PVLP156X) to 1,045 lb (Cybex’s Eagle NX), before plates. Cybex’s manual asks for a floor level to within 1/8 inch over 10 feet, and anchoring through every hole with a minimum pull force of 220 lb per anchor. For home floors, see our rubber gym flooring guide and gym flooring guide.

Safety

  • Keep the free area clear. Loose plates are trip hazards.
  • Watch the sled’s path. Body-Solid’s manual says not to allow children on or near the equipment.
  • Anchor if the maker says so, and don’t drill into a floor you aren’t sure about.
  • Lift boxes in teams. Our rule of thumb is a dolly for anything over about 100 lb.
  • Leave headroom for every mode. If you can’t stand upright in hack squat mode, don’t use that mode there.

Stop if you feel sharp pain while training. If you have a knee, hip, or back condition, talk to a physician or physical therapist first.
