Competition Kettlebells: Sizes, Colors, Accuracy, and Cost

A competition kettlebell keeps one outside size at every weight, usually about 280 mm tall and 210 mm across with a 35 mm handle. The bell is hollow, and the amount of metal changes as the weight goes up. That consistency is what you’re paying for. A 16 kg bell lists around $105 to $110 as of Nov 2026, against about $76 to $85 for cast iron. If you mostly swing and squat, you probably don’t need one. Our kettlebell guide covers cast iron, adjustable bells, and how to stock a rack.

What makes a kettlebell “competition style”

A standard cast iron bell grows as it gets heavier. A competition style kettlebell, or comp kettlebell in gym shorthand, doesn’t. Materials differ more than the name suggests:

  • Titan describes hollow-core steel.
  • Bells of Steel describes a one-piece, gravity-cast bell with a hollow core and no welds, and says the wall thickens with weight.
  • Eleiko describes molded high-grade iron with a powder coat.

Is there an Olympic kettlebell?

We found no Olympic kettlebell event or standard in the rules we read. Treat “Olympic” on a listing as marketing, and ask which federation’s specification it means.

Sizes by federation

Here’s what we could read directly. Third-party summaries disagree with each other, so we left them out.

IKO's dimensions come from a drawing in its rules, and its weights from its division list. A dash means that document doesn't state it.

IUKL’s regulation runs lighter for younger lifters, down to 12 kg for girls under 16. IKO also has lighter bells for youth and over-60 lifters, from 4 to 12 kg.

Our drawing of the dimensions in the International Kettlebell Organization's 2026 rules. Other federations and makers can differ.

Maker figures come close without matching exactly. Bells of Steel lists 280 mm by 210 mm with a 35 mm handle and a window 60 mm high, against 65 mm on IKO’s drawing. Titan’s spec table lists 290 mm tall, 210 mm across, and a handle 190 mm wide and 35 mm thick. Bells of Steel also says its bells meet GSU, IKFF, and IUKL standards. That’s the maker’s statement, and we couldn’t check it against those rulebooks.

If you plan to compete, ask the organizer what’s on the platform. IKO’s venue table lists standard competition bells among event requirements, so you may not lift your own.

Color coding

IKO’s rules include a weight chart that shows these colors. It’s the only federation color chart we could read, so don’t assume it applies everywhere.

32 kgRed34 kg

40 kgWhite or silver-

Read from the chart image in IKO's rules. Colors are our names for what the chart shows.

Colors repeat, so a yellow bell could be 4, 16, or 18 kg. Read the number. Titan and Bells of Steel both say their bells are color-coded with printed weights, but neither page’s text lists colors by weight, so compare the photos with any chart you need to match.

Handle and window

The handle is 35 mm on the bells we checked, from 8 kg up. Bells of Steel steps down to a 34 mm handle and a 64 mm window on its 4 and 6 kg bells for smaller hands. On a cast iron line, handles can run from 30 to 40 mm, so moving to a competition bell may feel thicker or thinner depending on where you started.

Handle finish matters over long sets. Titan describes its handle as smooth and polished, and IKO allows chalk, sandpaper, and brushes for handle preparation.

Accuracy tolerances

We found no weight tolerance in the federation documents we could read, and secondary sites give conflicting figures, so we won’t repeat them.

Within those claims, two bells in a pair could differ by up to 400 g, which you might notice in double-bell jerks. A scale settles it when the bells arrive.

Both makers had discounts running on several sizes when we checked.

Sport lifters need pairs for jerk and long cycle, so a matched 24 kg pair comes to about $280 at Titan’s price.

Kettlebell sport basics

A kettlebell competition is a timed set, and the score is the number of clean reps. You lift for as long as the clock runs, without setting the bell down.

  • The lifts. Jerk with two bells, snatch with one, and long cycle, which is a clean and jerk for reps.
  • Time. IKO’s rules list 10-minute and 5-minute events. IKMF runs 30- and 60-minute marathon sets.
  • Biathlon. Under IKO’s rules, this means two-bell jerk first, then one-bell snatch with one hand switch, at least 30 minutes apart on the same day.
  • Other formats. IUKL’s regulation lists a 12-minute snatch with multiple hand changes, an all-round event, and relays of four 3-minute stages.
  • Counting. A rep needs a visible stop overhead. IKMF requires 1 second, and it stops your set if you put the bell down. Throwing it down on purpose risks disqualification.
  • Gear. IKO limits belts to 12 cm at the back and 6 cm at the front, tapered, and it allows chalk.

Most newcomers don’t need a full set. One bell at your likely event weight, plus a lighter one for learning the snatch, is a sensible start in our judgment.

What the research says

Studies of the sport itself are few and small.

  • Physiological demand. A 2024 study had 13 experienced athletes do a 10-minute long-cycle routine, with 13 people resting seated as controls. Heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, and blood lactate rose and stayed high for at least 15 minutes. It wasn’t randomized, and maximal squat strength didn’t change.
  • Fatigue in the snatch. In a 2017 study, 12 kettlebell-trained men did a 6-minute set with 24 kg at about 14 reps a minute. Peak force on the bell fell over the set, though ground reaction forces didn’t change much.

We found no study comparing competition and cast iron bells, and no injury rates for kettlebell sport. So the case for a competition bell rests on fit and feel.

Safety

This is our own advice, since we found no injury research on the sport.

  • Learn the snatch with a coach. It puts a bell overhead for many reps, and faults are hard to feel when you’re tired.
  • Protect your hands. End the set if your grip starts to fail or skin tears, and keep handle preparation to what your federation allows.
  • Lower bells under control. A hollow bell can still damage floors and feet. Our gym flooring guide covers landing zones.
  • Stop for sharp pain. If you have a shoulder, wrist, or back condition, talk to a physician or physical therapist first.

FAQ

What size is a competition kettlebell?

The International Kettlebell Organization's 2026 rules show 280 mm tall, 210 mm across the body, and a 35 mm handle. Bells of Steel lists the same outside figures, and Titan lists 290 mm tall and 210 mm across. We couldn't read every federation's specification.

Where can I find competition kettlebells for sale?

GymBay Guides doesn't sell equipment. Titan Fitness and Bells of Steel both list them on their own sites, at about $105 to $110 for a 16 kg bell as of Nov 2026. Eleiko's page we read takes quote requests instead of showing a price.

Is there such a thing as an Olympic kettlebell?

We found no Olympic kettlebell event or standard in the rules we read. Kettlebell sport runs through its own federations. If a listing says Olympic, ask which specification it means.

What weight do I start with in a kettlebell competition?

In IKO's rules, the lightest open division is 16 kg for men and 8 kg for women, with lighter bells for youth and over-60 lifters. IUKL's amateur classes use 24 kg for men and 16 kg for women. Check the rules for your event.
