It’s easy to stick to a routine – creating that routine is the difficult part, and it’s easy to lose motivation. Today we’re going to show you some simple and easy tips to stay motivated so that you can stay on the path towards your fitness goals.

Set yourself goals

The first step is to set yourself goals. Having a these goals will help you stay motivated by giving you something to aim at, and then celebrate when you achieve it!

Are you looking to workout to stay fit, build muscle or increase your self confidence? Whatever your goals may be, it’s important to write down what you’d like to achieve so that you have a visual representation of what you’re working towards.

Create short term, achievable goals to help bring your long term targets closer. This could be doing 15 push-ups instead of the 10 you did last time for example. This way, you feel like you’re always moving forward. Progress provides motivation, and motivations achieves goals!

HAVE A WORKOUT BUDDY!

Now that you’ve set your goals it’s time to hit the gym. But going by yourself is a struggle isn’t it? No sweat! Ask one of your friends fto come along! Make working out a social thing to keep fit and have fun!

A workout buddy provides a great support system, as well as being able to hold each other accountable. You can check in with each other and help each other with whatever goals you are both working towards.

MIX UP YOUR ROUTINE

Making sure you mix up your routine will prevent a fitness slump and boredom. Working out the same muscle groups too often can also result in injury.

Therefore, you’re best to mix up your weekly routine with a combination of muscle group training, classes and cardio sessions. That way, you get the most from every workout and avoid the rinse and repeat rabbit hole that’s very easy to fall into.

It’s also important to make a routine you can stick to. If you always go out with your work friends on a Friday arvo after work, stop pretending you’re going to hit the gym instead!

Join a group class

Have a look at the different classes that are on and see what you will enjoy and what’s inline with your fitness goals. Joining a class is definitely going to help you stay driven with your workout plan, plus it’s a great way to meet new gym buddies!

Haven’t tried kickboxing? Never zen’d out with a Yoga class? Trying new things will only get you excited to head to the gym and closer to reaching your goals.

Group training can also make you feel accountable to your fellow class goers and class leader. This adds a positive kind of pressure that makes you want to perform better every class, which in turn improves your general fitness!

Have a personal trainer

Most people will achieve some short term goals in just a couple of weeks after regular training. However, without consistent training and smart workouts, you can easily hit a plateau with your progress. Unsurprisingly, this is the biggest motivation dropper you’re likely to experience.

Hiring a personal trainer ensures you’re doing the right exercises, eating the right food and maintaining a solid routine specific to you and your goals. It makes the sessions more valuable, and allows you to have your own personal motivator!

CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE!

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges of hitting the gym is probably your mindset. Changing your mindset from “I have to go to the gym” to “I want to go to the gym” will really help you stay on target and get you thinking more positively about working out.

Some easy ways to do this are:

  • Organise your sessions during the week and treat them as immovable. That way you can arrange social events around them and not feel like you’re missing out! #NoFOMO
  • Change up your routine – as we mentioned above, changing up your routine makes each visit exciting!
  • Achieving short term goals – try holding that plank 10 seconds longer this week, or try to get an extra chin-up in! Progress is power!

CELEBRATE THE WINS!

Now that you’ve set those goals, started going to the gym and made that commitment to reach your goals, celebrate the wins that you’ve achieved ! It’s a perfectly healthy way to remind yourself why you starting going it in the first place!

When you plan your goals, also plan what rewards you’d like to give to yourself. There’s nothing better than reaching those targets and gifting yourself for your hard work! For example, buying new clothes or even going to the movies are just a couple of nice rewards that you can do.
